Seven principles to overcome barriers in establishing a Public Health Information Exchange:
1. Use Standards but not at the expense of establishing the initial links. Migrate your exchange to a Standard in Phase II.
2. Public health IT professionals already possess the skills, products, and services to implement information exchanges. Study the many examples that are already in place.
3. Be quietly aggressive through leadership.
4. Tomorrow is not a “day.” In fact it is fairly hard to get work done tomorrow.
5. Overcome issues and barriers by working with a single mindset that focuses on all you are going to do with the data to improve people’s lives.
6. It is not necessary to think outside of the box – instead think simply of opening the box.
7. Never lose sight of why you went into the public health industry in the first place.
