RSV is one of the leading causes of infant deaths related to the highly communicable 'bronchiolitis'. RSV is considered endemic this year in the US, hospitalizing millions of infants under the age of one. Infants contracting RSV in the US have a distinct advantage compared to infants in other parts of the world, in that the majority have access to the specialty care such as ventilators and other high intensity measures. Any infant (however, especially premature infants) are at greatest risk for the serious or sometimes fatal consequences of RSV. What makes RSV even more complicated is that it is one of the viruses causing the common cold in adults, which when exposed to infants and young children have much more devastating effect. Globally, RSV is the leading cause of death for bronchiolitis-- mostly due in part to lack of access to proper medical care and lack of funds to produce the new vaccine that is slowly becoming availanble in the US.

STC is considering a number of innovative approaches and is seeking a public health partner to leverage disease surveillance and immunization systems in communities to minimize the risk of RSV. A pilot project would create public health decision support and patient education system that would minimize the risk and allow these tools to be provided in an Open source to the global health community to increase survival rates and to develop improved mechanisms for global distribution of vaccinations.
