For the first time in 20 years, Arizona Department of Health Services has a measles outbreak on their hands and STC's Immunization Management System is a critical tool to turn things around! Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano called for an "aggressive and timely outbreak control measures" to stop the spread of the highly contagious disease. STC's Immunization Information System is part of the current solution.
The Arizona State Immunization Information System (ASIIS) contains statewide immunization records dating back to 1995.
Pima County Health Department, where the epicenter of the outbreak reports using ASIIS to support irradication of the measles outbreak. ASIIS has provided Pima County with numbers of children identified as not being current with their MMR's, as well as AHCCCS with a listing (including addresses) of those identified as VFC (because of AHCCCS enrollment) that are 6 - 12 months and over 12 months not complete with two shots of the MMR. Arizona epidemiologists are using the ASIIS database for immunization history of any suspected or confirmed cases.
A State Immunization Program expert said that one "real challenge is the amount of adults that have contracted the disease." If ASIIS included adult immunization information, the mystery of who is and is not vaccinated would be solved. There is currently legislation (SB1098) pending a vote, to add adult immunization information to the registry.
